WASHINGTON, Mo. -- Construction is scheduled to begin today on a new Missouri River bridge at the eastern Missouri town of Washington.

Gov. Jay Nixon was in Washington on Friday for a groundbreaking ceremony. The new bridge carrying Highway 47 traffic will replace an old, narrow bridge built more than 80 years ago.

The new bridge will cost $63 million and is scheduled to open by November 2018.
