The Southeast Missourian has earned four awards for coverage of education in the annual Missouri State Teachers Association media awards competition.

The Missourian won the association's first-ever award for a literacy program, honoring the YELL for Newspapers campaign.

The weekly Teacher's Corner was honored in two categories; winning the special features category and an honorable mention for photography.

The newspaper was also honored for its editorials written about education issues throughout the year.

The competition recognizes outstanding coverage of education and education issues by the Missouri media. Nominations are judge on originality, impact, objectivity, timeliness, appeal and contribution to education.

Awards will be presented at the MSTA convention in St. Louis on Nov. 5.

Bruce Moe, director of communication for MSTA, said, "Southeast Missouri once again dominated in the competition."

Awards were presented in two newspaper divisions, dailies and weeklies, and for broadcast media.

In the editorials/columns category, the Suburban Journals of Greater St. Louis won for weeklies.

In the special features category, the Springfield News-Leader shared top honors with the Missourian for dailies and the Jackson Cash-Book Journal won for weeklies. Honorable mentions were given to Poplar Bluff's Daily American Republic and the weekly Doniphan Prospect News.

In photography, the Poplar Bluff Daily American Republic won for dailies and the Jackson Cash-Book Journal won for weeklies.

The Joplin Globe won the Exemplary Service Award.

In the television competition, KOLR-TV in Springfield won for general coverage, KOMU-TV in Columbia won for education feature and Mark Twain Cablevision in Montgomery City won for education service.

In the radio competition, Hunt Broadcasting Group in Doniphan won general coverage; KZZT in Moberly won for features; and KWIX in Moberly won for education public service announcements.

The broadcast exemplary service award went to Southwest Missouri Cable TV in Carthage.
