The Elks Mobile Dental Unit will visit Cape Girardeau May 24 through July 1, at the Cape Girardeau Elks Lodge, 639 Limbaugh Lane.

The unit has been operated by the Dental Department of Truman Medical Center-East of Kansas City since 1962 in partnership with the State of Missouri and the Missouri Elks Benevolent Association.

The purpose of the program is to bring primary care dental services to the handicapped and crippled children as well as mentally retarded/developmentally disabled children and adults throughout the state of Missouri. Over 100,000 residents have been served since 1962.

It is a self-propelled bus-like vehicle equipped to provide a full range of dental services, such as X-rays, fillings, extractions, cleaning and other treatments. All services are provided at no cost to the eligible patients.

Residents of Cape Girardeau, Bollinger, Scott and Perry counties are eligible for free dental care. They have to be referred by the Bureau of Special Health Care Needs or a Regional Center for the Developmentally Disabled.
