NEW SCOTT COUNTY VOTER ID CARDS MAILED

BENTON -- A new registration-identification card will be mailed to Scott County voters this week.

Voters who do not receive the ID cards should contact the county clerk's office to correct their address and ensure they are properly registered, said County Clerk Bob Kielhofner.

Under Missouri law, voters must be registered in the voting precinct where they live. The law also instructs the county clerk to issue each voter a new ID card in the primary and general-election years.

Some voters in Scott City will not receive their ID cards in this week's mailing because they received new cards earlier this year when Scott City realigned its city wards prior to a municipal election, Kielhofner said.

He said he is asking postmasters to return the ID cards with current addresses, in cases where recent changes of address are on file with the post office. "If we can obtain that kind of information from the post office, then we can proceed to help the voter change their registration without having to reregister," he said.

"However, if the voter's change of address data is out of date with the post office and we receive the ID card with no forwarding address information, then that voter is removed from the voter registration file," explained Kielhofner.

Scott County residents who believe they are registered, but don't receive voter cards within the next few days should contact the county clerk's office, he said.

"Women who were registered to vote in their maiden name or who may have remarried since they last registered to vote will need to reregister," he added.

The voter registration deadline for the Aug. 4 primary is July 15. Special voter outreach offices are located in the city halls at Oran, Chaffee, Scott City, Sikeston, Morley and Miner.

Voters can also register at superintendent offices in the Kelly School District at Benton and the Scott County Central School District at Morley, as well as at the post office in Perkins.

Voter registration is also offered on a part-time basis by town board clerks in Blodgett, Vanduser and Diehlstadt.
