Southeast Missouri State University officials announced the establishment of the Margaret Woods Allen Piano Scholarship last week.
Allen, a Sikeston resident who during the past decade has made several donations to the university, presented the gift on her 82nd birthday.
The donation will provide tuition, room and board, incidental fees and private instruction to promising and deserving piano students. The first scholarship will be awarded in the fall of 1992. The award is designed primarily for incoming freshmen, although it may be made available to transfer students as well.
Allen's range of interest have translated into aid for needy students, a program to preserve the oral history of the region's cotton economy of the 1920s and 1930s, gerontology, research in nursing education, the College of Business Administration, a student-managed real-money investment program, and now the department of music.
