New Madrid man among Missouri residents killed in traffic accidents over the New Year's weekend
NEW MADRID A New Madrid man was among at least 10 people killed on Missouri roads over the extended New Year's holiday weekend.
William Thurman, 48, of New Madrid, was killed Monday when a car driven by his wife, Joyce Thurman, 51, struck a patch of icy pavement, left the road and overturned, said the Missouri Highway Patrol.
The accident happened at 7:30 p.m. on Highway V, 3 miles south of Matthews, the patrol said.
Joyce Thurman was taken to Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston, where, a spokesman said, she was in stable condition Tuesday night.
A Sikeston woman suffered minor injuries Monday when the car she was driving slid sideways on the road and was struck by an oncoming car, the patrol said.
Deborah Smith, 41, was treated Missouri Delta Medical Center and released, said the hospital spokesman.
The vehicle that struck Smith's car was being driven by Russell Burger, 27, of Benton, who was uninjured, authorities said.
The accident occurred at 7:50 a.m. in Scott County, one-half mile east of Chaffee along Route A.
An Oklahoma woman and two girls were killed late Monday night in a collision on Interstate 44 about three miles east of Carthage, the Highway Patrol said.
The patrol said a westbound car driven by Jacquelyn Nabawi, 43, of Tulsa, crossed the median strip of the freeway and collided with an eastbound tractor-trailer. She and her passengers, Ameenah Abudlwakee, 9, and Nabawi Abudlwakee, 7, also of Tulsa, were killed.
Jason Kable, 16, of Sturgeon, was killed early Tuesday when his car left a Howard County road and struck a tree, the patrol said.
Kenneth L. Grigsby, 40, of Kansas City, died Saturday when his vehicle struck the one ahead of him on slick Kansas City roads. Grigsby's vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a second vehicle.
Four people were killed Friday night when two cars collided on U.S. 71 four miles south of Pineville. The victims were identified as Lana Johnson, 27, of Bella Vista, Ark., driver of one of the cars, and three people in the other car, Freddie Fare, 53, and Mary Radley, 79, both of Kansas City, Kan., and Larry Radley, 51, of Fontana, Kan.
The holiday death toll on roadways in Illinois was at least 12 during the long New Year's weekend, officials said Tuesday.
Eight of the deaths were in the Chicago area, three were near Hammond in central Illinois and one was near Carmi in southern Illinois.
