NEW MADRID, Mo. — A New Madrid man was to be arraigned today on charges of first-degree murder for the death of a toddler.

Larry D. Grant, 41, was being held in the New Madrid County Jail and was slated to appear in Division II of New Madrid County Circuit Court at 10 a.m. today. Grant was being held without bond.

New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens reported his department received a call at 4:12 p.m. Thursday in reference to a nonresponsive infant at an apartment on Pinnell Street in New Madrid. Rashod Lofton, 2, was pronounced dead at the scene by New Madrid County Coroner Jimmy McSpadden.

An investigation was conducted by the New Madrid County Sheriff's Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol and New Madrid City Police resulting in Grant's arrest at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
