SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- New home construction dropped by half last year in the Springfield area after years of growth across southwest Missouri.
Greene County issued fewer building permits for new single-family homes.
Builders took out a little more than 1,000 permits last year, down from nearly 2,000 in 2006.
Experts and builders said several factors are to blame. Those include severe weather, the national economy and too many empty homes on the market.
