The United Way of Southeast Missouri Leadership Luncheon on Thursday offered an opportunity to look at the work done in the organization's past and prepare for the future.

The official kickoff of its 2015 campaign is just around the corner, as is the official first day of the organization's new executive director.

Elizabeth Shelton of Cape Girardeau was introduced at the luncheon, held at Farraddays Steakhouse in Isle Casino Cape Girardeau. She has a background in marketing, specifically as owner of Write Results Marketing.

Nicholle Hinkle, director of donor relations at the United Way, said Shelton is working with the organization this week and officially steps into the role Aug. 10.

She said United Way staff and board members appreciate that Shelton is local, because she already has ties to the community and awareness of the organization's work.

While her background is more corporate-based than not-for-profit, Hinkle said they believe Shelton has a lot to bring to the table.

"We think her knowledge of the corporate world will work out for us," Hinkle said.

The United Way of Southeast Missouri has been without an executive director since May.

Nancy Jernigan had held the position since 1995.

She left the organization after coming to a mutual agreement with the board of directors the change was in its best interest, according to a news release issued at the time.

A search committee was formed to look for the next executive director.

The small staff at the United Way have been forced to pick up a few extra tasks over the past few months.

Board of directors president Kevin Greaser commended the staff Thursday, particularly Hinkle and director of community development Melissa Stickel.

He thanked both women for the "amazing achievements and accomplishments they've done in the absence of a director."

Shelton, too, recognized the staff for stepping up, saying she was "humbled and grateful" to be joining such a group.

To the rest of the crowd, which represented leadership from some of the top corporate sponsors of United Way, she expressed appreciation for their past and coming dedication to helping the community.

"You already are living united, and you already are putting compassion into action," Shelton said, invoking the United Way's theme this year.

Hinkle said Shelton will be coming on as executive director at just the right time.

Her first day will be followed quickly by the new campaign.

The 2015 campaign will kick off at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 27 at Cape West 14 Cine, 247 Siemers Drive.
