This long, simply-constructed barbecue pit was the classroom for 200 guests of the Cape County Poultry Improvement Association Thursday evening at Arena Park. This shows 110 broilers being barbecued over the charcoal fire while the crowd watched in anticipation of the half-chicken each person got to eat later. In the foreground, from the left, are County Agent A.D. Arnhart and Walter Russell, extension poultryman from the University of Missouri, applying the sauce as the chickens cooked. Further at the left, almost hidden by the smoke and engaged in the same chore are Bob Prather and Bob Shirley of Cape Girardeau. (G.D. Fronabarger/Southeast Missourian archive)
