KANSAS CITY -- Three students from the Southeast Missouri Music Academy participated in the recent Missouri Music Teachers Association state piano competition.

Diana Weaver, daughter of June Weaver of Cape Girardeau, received an honorable mention in the 11th-grade division. Matt Yount, son of June and Cecil Long of Patton, received an honorable mention in the 12th-grade division. Carol Jackson, daughter of Jerry and Diane McKee of Cape Girardeau, also competed.

Each memorized and played three pieces representing different musical styles. They are students of Becky Fulgham, director of the academy.

The competition was held at the University of Missouri at Kansas City Conservatory of Music.

The academy is a non-profit organization that provides both children and adults with music instruction on all band and orchestral instruments. It operates under the auspices of Southeast Missouri State University but receives no university funding.

The is seeking donations so it can continue to provide a limited number of 50 percent scholarships. Phone 651-2378 for more information.

Nine students currently are on scholarship, receiving $700 worth of lessons during the fall semester.

"A scholarship student can get lessons for as little as $60 a semester," Fulgham said.

Four of the scholarship students play piano, one is a voice student, one plays trumpet and three are string players.
