SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- Julio Leon, president of Missouri Southern State University for 25 years, announced his retirement Friday.

"I thank you for 25 wonderful years. Godspeed to each one of you and Missouri Southern," Leon told the faculty Friday.

Leon is currently in the second year of a three-year contract, which is evaluated and renewed each year by the board. His annual salary is $168,518.48. He is the third president in Missouri Southern State's history as a four-year institution.

Raised in Iquique, Chile, Leon majored in English at the University of Santiago, Chile. He earned a master's of business administration from the University of North Texas in 1968. He was hired at Missouri Southern in 1969 as an assistant professor in business administration.

After serving as dean for six years, Lone was named president in December 1982, when he was 44.
