Life for Mrs. A has been lonely since her husband died in May.

She cared for him at home as long as she was able and then visited him every day in the nursing center. Now that he has passed away, she is alone. The couple had no children.

Her financial support comes in a small pension and Social Security checks. But there are many things Mrs. A simply cannot afford on that limited income.

Medication for diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis is expensive. She says, "My body may be broken, but my mind is still good."

Mrs. A has a dog, cat and parakeet to keep her company at home.

She could use sweatshirts and pants in size extra-large. She could also use a new robe, pajamas and slippers. Sheets and blankets for her full-size bed and towels, washcloths and dish towels would be appreciated.

The Cape Girardeau Jaycees are helping to organize the Christmas for the Elderly program this year. The community program helps assure that the elderly population is cared for during the holidays. The program operates from referrals through the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center, Missouri Division of Senior Services and Hoover Eldercare Center.

Gifts like paper goods and toiletry items, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoos, soap, and some pet foods are needed. Stamps or gift certificates at discount stores and grocery stores also would be helpful.

The Southeast Missourian newspaper will collect gifts for Christmas for the Elderly at its Cape Girardeau and Jackson offices.

Tax-deductible donations can be mailed to Christmas for the Elderly, P.O. Box 4, Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63702-0004.
