Professional Secretaries Week was created in 1952 by Harry Klemfuss, a publicity man who "got sore that everyone honored Rosie the Riveter" instead of hard-working secretaries.
Corporate sponsor for the first Secretaries Week was the Dictaphone Corp., and it was endorsed by what is now Professional Secretaries International and the Commerce Department.
It didn't take long for florists, cardmakers and confectioners to catch on.
So how do you say thank you to the women and men who really run the place?
A survey this year by the Society of American Florists showed 54 percent of the respondents want to be recognized by their bosses during Professional Secretaries Week.
Most -- 40 percent -- think lunch would be a great way to celebrate the week. Flowers came in second, with 36 percent of the votes. Professional training, fruit baskets and desk accessories were also gifts of choice.
