MOST SCHOOL BOARD INCUMBENTS WIN

Most school board members in the region running for re-election won in Bollinger, Cape Girardeau and Scott counties in Tuesday's election.

Candidates in all of the area school districts competed for three, three-year positions.

BOLLINGER COUNTY

In Bollinger County, only three candidates sought election to Leopold and Zalma school boards.

John Dale Broshius will join incumbents Dwayne Stroder and Gerald Jansen on the Leopold board.

Tonya Brewer was elected to the Zalma board, along with incumbents Connie White and Rick Garner.

Elsewhere in the county, newcomer Scott Mayfield was the top vote-getter among four candidates for seats on the Meadow Heights school board. Mayfield received 553 votes, topping fellow challengers Harold Mills and Mike Welker, who were elected with 520 and 488 votes, respectively.

Dennis Mouser, an incumbent, received 119 votes as a write-in candidate.

Incumbents Myra Underwood and Jo Ann Shrum were re-elected for another term on the Woodland school board, receiving 806 and 779 votes, respectively. Also elected was Barry Booth, the top vote-getter with 911 votes.

Other candidates were incumbent Gary Roberts with 777 votes and Mark McCormick with 664 votes.

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY

Candidates for the Oak Ridge school board had the only easy ride in Cape Girardeau County. Incumbents Jeff Hahs, Charles Glueck and Jacqueline Ludwig all were re-elected.

One incumbent and two challengers competed in the Nell Holcomb school board race. Incumbent Jeri Holcomb, Mark Martin and Kim Kelley were elected.

Delta schools had the most candidates for office in the region. Aaron Helderman Jr., Wesley Kinder Jr., and Jerri Lynn Menz were elected with 243, 264 and 207 votes, respectively. Other candidates receiving votes were incumbent James Bowers, 192; Roger Seabaugh, 125; Mike Kelley, 139; Diane Starkey Horn, 160; Phyllis Rhodes, 86; and Troy Smith, 68.

SCOTT COUNTY

Three incumbents were elected to another term on the Chaffee school board. William McFerron, Linda Cunningham Wessel and Randy Dooley were the only candidates.

Rodney Dock received 383 votes, Fred Higdon received 356 votes, and Dorothy Deason received 491 votes to win seats on the Kelso C-7 school board. Jerry Klaffer received 283 votes in a losing effort.

Voters in the Oran School District had to narrow a field of seven candidates. Winners were incumbent Larry Hatfield, 337; Neal Seyer, 336; and Mark Eftink, 272.

Others receiving votes were Jerry Lange, 266; Ray Cook, 244; Lee Trankler, 149; and Dan Heeb, 75.
