More rain is in the forecast for an already waterlogged region, according to the National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky.

Another 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected to soak Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois during the next three to five days, said Robin Smith, National Weather Service meteorologist.

"What's going to happen is this may slow down the rivers' dropping or even keep them at a steady stage for a few days," Smith said.

A second bout of rainfall is expected to begin Monday.

"The good news is we're not looking at another steady deluge," Smith said.

As of 9 p.m. Tuesday, the Mississippi River was at 40.4 feet and expected to drop to 33.9 feet by Friday.
