JACKSON -- Proving that Jackson developers sense potential for business growth, two more property owners succeeded in getting land changed to commercial zoning Monday.

D&G Investments had requested the Jackson Board of Alderman rezone two lots from light industrial to general commercial. Twelve more were rezoned from light industrial to general residential. Lawson Burgfeld and Emogene Schnurbush asked that one lot in Chrisemma Subdivision be rezoned from general residential to general commercial.

In both cases, the land zoned commercial was along the developing Highway 61, or East Jackson Boulevard. Although the Burgfeld request went through the Planning and Zoning Board and the Board of Aldermen without a hitch, there was some disagreement on the D&G land in Sappington Court Subdivision.

Planning and Zoning voted 4-to-3 not to grant the Sappington Court rezoning, but aldermen overruled it with a unanimous vote. Larry Cunningham, a member of Planning and Zoning who voted for the rezoning, said some members didn't understand the issue.

"Sometimes P&Z doesn't get to look at something very long," said Cunningham, an aldermanic candidate. "We just get it and have to vote on it. If we were to do the vote again now, I think it would be approved."

He said D&G Investments plans to sell off land along East Jackson Boulevard and build apartments behind the commercial lots.

During the information portion of Monday's Board of Aldermen meeting, City Administrator Steve Wilson said the Department of Public Works is taking a hard look at the decaying North Farmington Street, trying to decide on the best plan of action.

"There is no base on that road at all," Wilson said. "We're thinking about breaking up the asphalt to use as a base and turning the road back into gravel to make it easier to maintain. That won't be a popular decision, but it may be necessary."

There should be a final decision on the road soon.
