CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University's McLeod Theater will conclude its spring season with the performance of Moliere's "Tartuffe" April 29-30 and May 6-7 at 8 p.m.
Known as the master of French farce, Moliere provides a classic European touch to what has become a famous comedy.
The play centers around the fool-hardy Orgon, who takes the religious hypocrite Tartuffe into his home. Soon the whole family is under seige as Tartuffe makes a play for Orgon's daughter, his wife and his money.
Director Mike D. Morris employs an unusual raked stage that appears to float in space. The stage is not placed it in any particular time period but 17th century grandeur is suggested.
Similarly, the costumes are cut in traditional 17th century styles but made with a variety of modern fabrics to make the characters identifiable with people of today.
"Tartuffe" can be also seen at the McLeod Theater on May 1 at 2 p.m.
For ticket information and reservations call the theater box office during week days from noon until 4:30 p.m. at (618) 453-3001.
