The Missouri Department of Transportation cautions drivers that road conditions could become hazardous over the weekend.

Motorists could experience a mix of snow, freezing rain and rain, a MoDOT news release said. The mix is forecast to start as snow Saturday and conclude as rain Sunday.

A hazardous weather outlook from the National Weather Service at Paducah, Kentucky, is calling for record or near-record low temperatures this afternoon and tonight across the region, with wind chills ranging from single digits in the south to near zero in the north. The region should warm to above freezing Sunday. Rain is expected after early Sunday morning, but may briefly change back to freezing rain or sleet before ending late that night. Little or no accumulation is expected, according to the National Weather Service.

MoDOT crews will treat roads during and after the storm. Motorists are advised to check road conditions before they travel and avoid travel if it all possible especially with potential icy conditions overnight Saturday.

MoDOT said roads with the highest volume of traffic, including interstates and other heavily traveled state routes are plowed or treated first and continuously addressed until mostly clear.

MoDOT advises drivers who need to travel to bring a cellphone and winter survival supplies.
