ST. LOUIS (AP) — A Mississippi River bridge connecting Missouri and Illinois at St. Louis apparently was not damaged after breakaway barges scraped a center pier.

U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Commander Tim Whalen said 15 barges broke loose from a towboat at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday and scraped the center pier of the Poplar Street Bridge.

He said the barges were recovered, and a Missouri Department of Transportation inspection revealed no damage to the bridge.

The bridge was open to vehicles and vessels.
