On Friday the Missouri Department of Transportation awarded 34 grants for the Safe Routes to School program. The federal program was created in 2005 to encourage children to walk to school through activities and by making safety improvements. Cities, police departments and other organizations statewide received $582,000.

The Cape Girardeau Safe Communities program will receive $22,089, the Jackson Police Department will receive $12,618 and the Chaffee Police Department will receive $4,927. In Cape Girardeau, the grant helps fund the Walking School Bus program at Alma Schrader Elementary.
