Mo. House Democrat facing criminal charges drops out of race

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A southeast Missouri House member won't seek re-election.

Democrat Brad Robinson, of Bonne Terre, has withdrawn from the ballot.

Robinson and his wife, Tara Robinson, face criminal charges stemming from a New Year's Day traffic accident in which Robinson's truck hit a 46-year-old man.

The lawmaker has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident, which could lead to up to four years in prison if he's convicted. Tara Robinson has been charged with making a false declaration, which is a misdemeanor.

Three Democrats filed to challenge Robinson in a primary, and a Republican also has filed for the seat. More can file until May 28 because candidacy filing reopens when an incumbent drops out.
