Mo. GOP governor candidate Hulshof banks big money

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Republican gubernatorial candidate Kenny Hulshof has taken in more than $1 million after the repeal of Missouri's campaign contribution limits.

A state law that took effect on Thursday allows candidates to receive donations of unlimited size. But it requires that contributions of more than $5,000 be reported within 48 hours.

In the first three days under the law, Hulshof reports receiving $1.2 million -- half of which came from the Republican Governors Association.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jay Nixon reported receiving about $400,000 in big contributions during that time.

The large donations should help Hulshof narrow his fundraising gap with Nixon. Hulshof says he spent almost all his money to win the Republican primary in August. Nixon didn't face any serious opposition in the primary.
