Teresa Connell, graphic designer for the Southeast Missourian, won the two top spots for news graphics in the 1997 Kansas-Missouri Associated Press News photo/Graphics Contest.

Connell was honored Monday at the Missouri-Kansas Publishers and Editors convention in Kansas City. She won for newspapers serving small cities.

She won first place award for a graphic entitled "Money Matters," concerning salaries at Southeast Missouri State University. Second place was for a graphic called "On the right track," concerning railroad crossing safety in Southeast Missouri.

The graphics contest, judged by Kansas State Collegian adviser Ron Johnson, drew 44 entries.

Connell said the key for news graphics is presenting lots of information in a format readers can understand and in a small space.

She has been with the news department at the Missourian since February 1997. She also is a member of the newspaper's online staff. Connell has worked at the newspaper since April 1989, working in the advertising department.

Connell has won numerous awards for her work in advertising and marketing, including both state and national honors.

She graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a major in design and a minor in marketing.
