GALLATIN, Mo. -- The northern Missouri city of Gallatin has passed an ordinance banning the installation of propane tanks within city limits, a measure aimed at protecting the city's struggling natural-gas utility.

The utility has struggled to generate enough revenue to cover its operating costs and its $35,000 monthly loan payments.

The ordinance, which was passed last week, prohibits new propane tanks from being installed. Current propane users will not be affected.
