Mississippi River level remains high in NE Mo.

ST. LOUIS -- The National Weather Service continues to keep an eye on the higher-than normal level of the Mississippi River near Hannibal in northeast Missouri.

Weather Service officials told the Hannibal Courier-Post they didn't expect anything more than minor flooding. The river is expected to remain at or near the 16-foot flood stage for the next several days.

Ice jams near Hannibal are being blamed for the high water, essentially creating artificial dams that caused the river to back up. The amount of ice on the Mississippi is considered fairly rare.

River levels at most other Missouri towns were not unusually high.
