CHARLESTON, Mo. -- A Mississippi County Jail employee is facing charges after allegedly bringing weapons and other items to prisoners.

Nelson McMikle is charged with two counts of delivery of a weapon in a county jail, one count of delivery of a controlled substance and one count of delivery of an item that a prisoner is prohibited from receiving.

According to Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore, he and chief deputy Charlie Marcum received information from a confidential informant that a corrections officer was bringing various contraband into the Detention Center for inmates.

When McMikle arrived for work, Moore and Marcum checked his lunch box. Inside the lunch box, Moore reported, was a large bag of tobacco and a cellphone. McMikle was then placed under arrest.

"Nelson said he has brought items into the Detention Center on more than one occasion," Moore said in a news release. "Nelson said he has been bringing contraband into the jail for the past approximately six months."

The sheriff said McMikle stated he received $80 for delivery of the items.

Bond for McMikle is set at $75,000 cash or surety.
