The meeting was called to order by Commander Bill Sullivan.
The color guard advanced the colors, chaplain Boyd Summers gave the opening prayer, members recited the pledge of allegiance to the flag, and Preamble of the American Legion Constitution in unison. A total of 51 members were present.
Charles Hutson introduced Scott Lane and Greg Schwab who represented Post #158 at Boy's State. They were very busy, but it was a good learning experience, learning how government operates at different levels. Scott intends to pursue a career as an attorney or engineer. Greg has a goal of being a Baptist minister. Both will be seniors at Jackson High School this fall. We wish them the very best, as they pursue their lifetime goals.
Jeff Brune, from the County Commissioner's office, brought us up to date on the latest plans for the nature center to be built in Cape County Park. The war memorial will remain as is due to the high cost of relocating it. A new entrance will be built for one, other changes are to be made, but permanent plans are incomplete.
The minutes of the July meeting were approved.
Committee reports as follows: Mike Proctor gave the financial report, which was accepted. The report for fiscal year 1999-2000 was approved.
Ken Koehler introduced the coaches and team members of the Legion baseball team, who compiled a 21-18 record, and won the district championship for the first time. Overall, it was an enjoyable year.
Lloyd Law -- no report of members who have signed for year 2000-2001.
Glen Bollinger -- no report on graves. Trustee, Harlan Siebert announced the shrubs had been removed from the parking lot. Bill Poe asked for help for Homecomers, gave the club room report, and mentioned Bryan Fluegge donated a potty chair. Carlton Meyer, flags -- We sold one, and gave one away. He also reported an Honor Guard memorial service for Leonard Conrad, Jack Lattimer announced a POW-MIA service at Brookside Memorial Sept. 9, beginning at 8:30 a.m..
House report -- Leon Laurentius, accepted as presented, needs help for the month of August. Bingo report by Leonard Adams approved as presented.
The American Red Cross will have a blood drive at the hall, Monday Aug. 14.
Harlan Siebert requested help in erecting the stage for Homecomers on Saturday, Aug. 19. Breakfast at 7 a.m., prepare to work at 8 a.m.
In addition, he mentioned if the Post would contribute $800 to Aid Association for Lutherans, they would match these funds, to erect a new sign on the post premises. A motion was made to accept their offer, members voted approval.
Bingo will he held at the regular time, even though it is Homecomers week.
The name of Marvin E. Proffer was drawn for the attendance prize of $89.75, not present. The names of Burnell Mueller, Nelson Ehlbrecht, Leonard Beussink and Rusby Niswonger were drawn for half, Rusby Niswonger was present.
There being no further business, Chaplain Boyd Summers gave the memorial prayer, the colors were retired, Commander Sullivan gave the closing remarks, meeting adjourned at 9:10 p.m. Everyone retired to the dining room, where everybody enjoyed lasagna, prepared by Vince Schwartz, post chef.
