Cape Girardeau County Clerk Rodney Miller says his job is "an every-day job that you have to do."

"It is not a glamour job," Miller said.

But Miller is proud of the work he does. Miller, who has served as county clerk for two decades, plans to seek re-election to another four-year term.

"We have an excellent county government where everyone works together with the best interests of the citizens of this county as their priorities," he said.

Because of that spirit of cooperation and business-like approach to county government, the county is in sound financial condition, he said.

The county clerk's office handles various duties, ranging from conducting elections to maintaining county records.

Despite increased responsibilities, the clerk's office still operates with a five-member staff as it did when Miller took office.

"We have tried to make sensible progress and keep up with technology and the responsibilities of the office, he said.

Under Miller, the county implemented punch-card voting in 1980. The system has proved accurate and quicker in vote counting.

Miller and his staff have worked to increase voter registration. Today, the county has a record 43,000 registered voters.

"The opportunity is there to vote," he said.

Miller has been active in the Missouri Association of Counties since 1979 and has held several offices ranging from district director to state president.

He chairs the association's insurance committee, which helped establish a statewide liability insurance pool.

He also is chairman of the association's workers' compensation pool that includes more than 90 counties with over $4 million in premiums.

The pool has returned over $2 million in dividends to member counties, including $45,000 for Cape Girardeau County.

Miller was president of the Missouri County Clerks Association in 1991.

He is a member of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce, Jackson Rotary Club, Southeast Missouri Hospital Association, Farm Bureau and other organizations.

A native of Cape Girardeau County, Miller and his wife, Jan, live on a farm near Millersville. They attend Millersville Methodist Church.
