The Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau has a new director.
Mary Foote Miller, manager of the Cape Girardeau Country Club for the past eight years, will become the new bureau head Aug. 16.
"We're looking forward to working with Miller," said Cape Girardeau City Manager J. Ronald Fischer, who announced Miller's position Wednesday. "She'll bring strength to the city management team."
Miller said, "I'm excited about my new position. I have worked closely with the CVB over the years."
The bureau, which promotes tourism and conventions in the Cape Girardeau area, is now operating as a new division of the city.
The bureau, which has been in the Chamber of Commerce building since it was founded in 1985, is moving to new quarters at 1707 N. Kingshighway Aug. 2.
The bureau was operated by the Chamber of Commerce since it was founded, but the association's advisory board requested in June to be placed under the direction of the city.
Miller, a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University with a bachelor of science degree in education, taught school in Scott County for a year before going into retail. She was part owner and manager of Port Cape Girardeau Restaurant in downtown Cape Girardeau for a number of years. She has been active in community and civic activities, particularly Zonta Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and the bureau.
She is a past recipient of the Young Woman of the Year Award three times, and was winner of the Tourism Ambassador Award in 1982.
Miller was one of 60 applicants for the position.
Lyn Muzzy, who previously served as director of the bureau, recently agreed to a six-months contract with the city of Cape Girardeau as a convention and tourism consultant.
