After serving Perry County for over two decades, Miller Family Funeral Home in Perryville, Missouri, has closed.
The number for the funeral home has been disconnected. The person answering the phone for the business's alternate number confirmed it is no longer in business.
"They do not have an establishment license anymore, which means they cannot conduct funerals," Josh Ford of Ford and Sons Funeral Home, based in Cape Girardeau, said.
He said the Millers carry a pre-need license, which is issued to those wanting to sell life insurance and fixed annuities for funeral pre-arrangement. Through an ad in the Southeast Missourian, Ford and Sons Funeral Home and Young and Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Perryville have announced they would attempt to honor pre-need contracts purchased from Miller Family Funeral Home.
"It's just an interesting situation. We realize there's a gap there, and there's no really easy solution to it," Ford said. "We're stepping in to try and help a bad situation."
Miller Family Funeral Home is owned by Herbert and Kathleen Miller. Herbert Miller has decades of experience as a funeral director and served as Perry County coroner for 20 years.
In 2015, Herbert Miller resigned as coroner after a conviction of felony financial exploitation of the elderly and theft.
In February, the couple filed for bankruptcy in the Southeastern Division of the Eastern District of Missouri's U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
According to Kathleen Miller, a statement regarding the situation at the funeral home will be released at a later date.
