PETTIS COUNTY, Mo. (AP) -- A Johnson County Sheriff's deputy has killed a burglary suspect following a chase and shootout in Pettis County.
Deputy James Doty followed a stolen van on Sunday into Pettis County, and eventually exchanged shots with the van's driver on Upton Road. Johnson County Sheriff Chuck Heiss said Doty fired one shot, striking the male suspect.
Doty fell into a culvert on the east side of Missouri Route B while pursuing the suspect on foot. The suspect was found about 70 yards away, and later pronounced dead. Officials said Doty was treated at a Kansas City hospital for injuries from the fall.
The Pettis County coroner sent the body to the Boone County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy and identification.
