A group of Belgian students wearing blue ponchos broke the world record Friday for the most Mentos fountains by launching 1,360 geysers at the same time, according to reports in British media outlets.
The fountains are activated by a reaction between the Mentos candy and cola when the candy is dropped into a soda bottle.
The previous record was set in Cape Girardeau, when 973 fountains were launched simultaneously Oct. 3 at Arena Park. Launch organizer Jason Lindsey said in his blog on www.semissourian.com that he's planning "another record-breaking science event" for Oct. 3 this year.
