DEKALB, Ill. -- Public health officials have confirmed that a 21-year-old Northern Illinois University student has died after contracting a blood-borne strain of the bacterium that causes bacterial meningitis.
Mabruk Hussain Khandaker, 21, was pronounced dead Thursday at Kishwaukee Community Hospital. Test results showed he died of meningococcemia, a form of meningococcal disease.
DeKalb County Public Health Administrator Karen Grush said there are no plans to immunize large numbers at this time, because one case is not considered an outbreak.
