Several events are being planned in the area to mark the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Events and observances include:
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has ordered all schools to lower their flags to half-staff.
Prayer service at 8 a.m. at Notre Dame Regional High School.
Cape Girardeau police and fire departments will gather at 9:45 a.m. for a remembrance event at Fire Station No. 1.
Fire marshal Mike Morgan, police chief Stephen Strong and the Rev. David Dissen, chaplain, will lead the service. A moment of silence will be observed at 9:59 a.m., the time of the south tower collapse at the World Trade Center. A truck bell on fire engine 3 will chime as well.
Open sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson throughout the day for prayer and meditation.
Candlelight vigil and unity procession at Southeast Missouri State University. Students will begin gathering at 8:45 p.m. at the residence halls and will process at 9 p.m. to the fountain in front of Kent Library.
Phi Mu Alpha will provide music during the processional. The vigil will begin at 9:15 with various campus ministries participating. The events are sponsored by the Student Activities Council.
