Former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese and Village Voice staff writer Nat Hentoff will debate freedom of speech and the First Amendment on Oct. 1 at the Show Me Center.
The debate is open to the public and begins at 7:30 p.m.
During the Reagan administration, Meese was noted for his domestic political agenda, targeting welfare reform, drug enforcement and crime control. He is a distinguished fellow of both the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. and the Hoover Institution in Palo Alto, Calif.
Hentoff has been a staff writer for the Village Voice, a New York City literary magazine, since 1958. Hentoff writes weekly in the Washington Post about his views on journalistic responsibility and the rights of Americans to think, speak and write freely. He was the recipient of Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellowships.
Tickets for the debate are $3 for the general public and $1.50 for students. They are available at the Show Me Center box office and the information desk at the University Center on campus. The debate is sponsored by the Southeast Missouri State University Student Activities Council.
