SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Authorities were investigating how an anti-estrogen pill wound up embedded inside a piece of Halloween candy.
Lottie Forrest told investigators she had taken her children trick-or-treating and found the pill when she bit into a soft-center caramel candy Friday evening. She called a hospital and later contacted the Greene County Sheriff's Department for closer examination.
The pill was identified as an anti-estrogen medication, which is sometimes given to women who have been treated for breast cancer.
Detective Frank Duren said police were contacting residents in the southwest Greene County neighborhood where Forrest and her children went trick-or-treating.
Forrest said she had examined her children's candy and saw nothing alarming. Duren said there were no apparent signs of tampering with the caramel in which the pill was found.
"The candy appeared normal," Duren said.
"The wrapper was intact and there were no visible warning signs."
