Eric Matzat, a senior music major at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, was a recent winner in the collegiate woodwind division of the Missouri Wurlitzer competition.
The Music Teachers' National Association sponsored the competition which was held at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg. Any Missouri woodwind performer under the age of 27 was eligible to participate.
Matzat, saxophonist, competed against flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe and bassoon entrants. A minimum of 30 minutes of music was required of each performer. Portions of each performance contained a memorized major work supplemented by selections from the baroque, romantic, classical, and contemporary periods.
As the Missouri winner, Matzat will advance to the eight-state regional to be held at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, from Jan. 10-12, 1992.
Matzat, a student of Randall Hamm, is a 1988 graduate of Cape Central High School. He is the son of the Rev. William and Bonnie Matzat.
