MATH STUDENTS COMPETE

More than 700 students from 36 area schools competed in the annual Math Field Day on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. The event was sponsored by Southeast's Department of Mathematics and the Southeast Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Area winners for Individual Open Events:

Cape Central Junior High School: Johnathan Anderson, fourth place in geometry; Matt Hawkins, third place in geometry.

Cape Central Senior High School: Adam Bryant, first place in algebra; Alice Chen, fifth place in computer programming; Bryan Daume, second place in trigonometry; Aaron Hessenkemper, first place in probability.

Notre Dame High School: Tom Berkbigler, third place in probability; Jeremy Bratton, third place in algebra and first place in sets and logic; Kristy Jansen, second place in geometry and fifth place in mental arithmetic; Jennifer Layton fourth place in algebra and first place in trigonometry; Ben LeGrand, second place in probability and third place in trigonometry; Scott Reinagel, third place in mental arithmetic.

Jackson Junior High School: Andrew Luehrs, fourth place in mental arithmetic; Raegan Scheper, first place in geometry.

Leopold High School: Jennifer Peters, fifth place in sets and logic; David Turner, second place in mental arithmetic.

Meadow Heights High School: Pete Palermo, fourth place in history of math.

Notre Dame High School: 9th Grade Level: Vince Horrell, first place in number bases; Michael Sirimaturos, fourth place in number bases; Sarah Westrich, first place in word problems. 10th Grade Level: Vince Horrel, third place in algebra I; Katie Wencewicz, fourth place in geometry. 11th Grade Level: Derek Fenwick, third place in word problems; Jeff Mueller, fifth place in word problems. 12th Grade Level: Tom Berkbigler, second place in matrices & determinants; Jeremy Bratton, fifth place in analytic geometry.

Chaffee High School: 12th Grade Level: Jerimy Ferguson, fourth place in calculus.

Leopold High School: 11th Grade Level: Cindy Eftink, fourth place in word problems.

Oak Ridge High School: 12th Grade Level: Patrick Nesbit, fifth place in matrices & determinants.

Cape Central Senior High School: Christy Hey, Kevin Pingel, Nora Renka, and Darcy Rigdon won first place in algebra II; Adam Bryant, Alice Chen, Jennifer Jones, and Emily Trueblood won second place in medley.

Notre Dame High School: Stephanie Arnzen, Joe Essner, Kristy Jansen, and Katie Wencewicz won third place in geometry; Tom Berkbigler, Jeremy Bratton, Jennifer Layton, and Ben LeGrand won first place in trigonometry.

Jackson Junior High School: Robert Haupt, Andrew Luehrs, Tyson Watson, and Ryan Weissmueller won first place in algebra I.

Area winner for Problem Solving School Event:

Cape Central Senior High School: Ann Schnurbusch, sponsor, won third place.

Notre Dame High School won second place and Cape Central High School placed third in the mathletics competition.
