Margaret Thatcher, former prime minister of Great Britain, may speak at Southeast Missouri State University next spring.
The College Republicans and the Conservative Club hope to bring Thatcher to the Show Me Center, possibly in mid-March.
Nathan Cooper, a member of the two clubs, said nothing has been finalized. "There is no contract."
He said the two groups hope to finalize a contract soon.
Student Government has allocated $16,800 in student-fee revenue toward the cost of bringing Thatcher to Southeast. The sponsoring clubs would have to pay the remainder of the nearly $30,000 cost.
The cost includes a $25,000 honorarium, said Chris Robertson, Student Government president.
Robertson said the $16,800 is a large share of the $36,000 in student-fee revenue that has been earmarked for student organizations for this school year, excluding the Student Government and the Student Activities Council.
But Robertson said Thatcher is worth the cost, and there is the potential of receiving some money back through ticket sales.
Robertson said a Thatcher visit likely would attract a few thousand students and a similar number of area residents.
