MARBLE HILL -- Shirley Illers Cooper, the mayor of Marble Hill, has been selected as one of six Jefferson Award winners by WPSD-TV of Paducah, Ky.
The Jefferson Award is designed to recognize outstanding community service work in local communities. Winners are selected by a panel of nine judges from throughout Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee and Illinois.
This year, 100 nomination letters were submitted for consideration for the award.
Cooper, a native of Marble Hill, has been the city's mayor since 1986. She was nominated by Pauline Clubb.
Cooper is a past president of the Marble Hill Chamber of Commerce and has been a member of the following organizations: Marble Hill Planning and Zoning Commission, Twin City Industrial and Air Park Board, Marble Hill-Lutesville Park Board, Industrial Development Authority of Bollinger County, Woodland Community Teachers Association, Alpha Delta Kappa, Woodland Alumni Association, Southeast Missouri State University Alumni Association, Bollinger County Historical Society and the Missouri Girls Town Board of Directors.
She served for 10 years on the General Foundation of Women's Clubs International Board of Directors, and is a member of the Marble Hill-Lutesville Junior Women's Club.
A member of the Lutesville Presbyterian Church, Cooper is the recipient of numerous other community service awards.
