MARBLE HILL -- A 10-year-old Marble Hill boy drowned Sunday afternoon after the boat he and two other boys were fishing from capsized in a pond.

Bollinger County Coroner Gene Ward said Dodge Christopher Webb, 10, of Marble Hill fell into the small pond at about 3:45 p.m. Sunday.

The pond is situated on property owned by Gary Cate near Route 531, about 12 miles north of Marble Hill.

Ward said the three boys apparently were in a small boat fishing, when the boat capsized, throwing Webb into the pond.

"As I understand, one of the little boys had gotten a hold of (Webb), but when he started to pull him down, he had to let him go," the coroner said.

Also in the boat with Webb were Jeremy Haygood, 12, and Noah Luttrell, 10. The other boys were unharmed.

None of the boys were wearing life preservers, Ward said. Another child, Amanda Haygood, was standing at a dock when the boat capsized.

When attempts to pull Webb from the water were unsuccessful, Ward said the Bollinger County Civil Defense Rescue Team was called to the pond.

They arrived at 4:20 p.m. and pulled Webb's body from the pond at 5:05.

"Of course, this will be reviewed by the state's Child Fatality Review Board, but that's routine in all child deaths," he added. "It was pretty clear what happened."
