MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Marble Hill's board of aldermen have only one more meeting before a new board takes over April 8. At Monday's meeting, city attorney Alan Beussink urged the board to "be thinking about appointing a mayor."
Since former mayor Michael Sowers left office midterm, Alderman James Sear has been serving as mayor pro tem. Sear is not seeking re-election in Ward 2, and after the board adjourns for the final time, he can no longer serve as mayor pro tem. It is up to the board to appoint a mayor to fill Sowers' unexpired term.
"It is incumbent on you to find someone you think would do a good job," Beussink told the board.
According to city hall personnel, no one has indicated an interest in being considered for that office for a year.
"I would also think about an alderman for Ward 2," Beussink said.
The only candidate for alderman in Ward 2, Belinda Brown, withdrew because of the turmoil in city hall during the last year. Filling that position can be done through write-in votes in Tuesday's election, but the person receiving the most write-in votes is not obligated to accept the position.
