The Society of Manufacturing Engineers chartered Student Chapter 208 recently on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.
About 80 students are members of the chapter. The officers are David Rudin of Wentzville, chairman; Sonya Mann of Redford, first vice chairperson; Lindell Barks of Sedgewickville, second vice chairperson; Aimee Schreiner of Cape Girardeau, treasurer; and Todd Dohogne of Jackson, secretary.
The ceremony, which featured a keynote address by Norman Dahlstrom of the Boeing Commercial Airplane Co., was held in the University Center ballroom.
The society is a non-profit professional society dedicated to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the field of manufacturing engineering and to applying its resources to research and writing, publishing and disseminating information.
Founded in 1932, it has provided direction for the evolution of manufacturing and has an international reputation for manufacturing technology leadership.
Headquartered in Dearborn, Mich., the society has 80,000 members in 70 countries and sponsors more than 300 senior chapters and 200 student chapters and units.
"This will establish a linkage between manufacturing and the university," said Ted Loso, chapter faculty adviser and instructor of industrial technology. "It also will allow students to be a part of the world's largest organization for manufacturing.
"The students will be able to meet industry leaders with whom they eventually will work. It will give them confidence that their education is meaningful and that Southeast is on target as far as industrial technology programs go," he said.
At the ceremony, Southeast President Kala Stroup said the society "offers an excellent opportunity for our students to network with manufacturing practitioners, and come face to face with the issues and current technological advancements in the field."
