An incident in which police surrounded a Cape Girardeau home Sunday evening was resolved peacefully.

About 6:30 p.m. Sunday, police surrounded a home on West Mount Drive and approached the home on a request to check the welfare.

When officers arrived on the scene, a man was said to have locked himself in his home. After discovering a man inside had a weapon, police retreated from the scene and called for backup.

Officers called for the man to exit the building, he refused for about 45 minutes. He then was taken into custody without further incident.

Darin Hickey, public information officer for the Cape Girardeau Police Department, said the subject had psychological problems and officers believed he was a danger to himself.

The situation was handled peacefully by 7:30 p.m., when the man was taken to a medical facility to be evaluated.

Hickey said the subject's name could not be released at this time.
