A Cape Girardeau man and a Perryville, Missouri, teenager have been charged in connection with a Labor Day shooting.

The Cape Girardeau County prosecutor's office filed charges against Kaleb D. Starnes, 21, and Zieon K. Ayers, 17, according to a post Wednesday on the Cape Girardeau Police Department Facebook page.

Ayers and Starnes are each charged with two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action. Starnes also is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, according to the release.

Both defendants are charged with the shooting of Anthony Odoms and for "shooting at" Mario Wilson, the release said.

Both defendants were arrested Tuesday, according to police.

A 16-year-old girl also initially was taken into custody and turned over to juvenile authorities. She was later released with no charges filed against her after the investigation showed she was not involved in the shooting, the release said.

Odoms was injured in the shooting, which occurred around 2:15 p.m. Monday in the 100 block of South Park Avenue in Cape Girardeau.

Odom was shot in the upper torso and transported to a hospital, according to police.

Police department public-information officer Rick Schmidt said Wednesday he had no information on a motive for the shooting, which occurred around 2:15 p.m. Monday.

The Southeast Missourian reported police photographed at least nine pieces of evidence Monday, including several bullet casings, in the street and on a sidewalk in front of a residence a few houses north from where paramedics were treating the wounded man.

Bond has been set at $250,000 cash only for both Ayers and Starnes, according to the Facebook post.
