Cape Girardeau County EMTs carried a man out of a house at 700 block of North Middle Street who had suffered an apparent gunshot wound to the right side of his chest shortly after midnight Wednesday.

The victim, who appeared to be in his mid-20s, appeared conscious and moving his arms as rescuers carried him in a stretcher towards an ambulance.

Cape Girardeau police officers collected evidence and took several pictures inside the house. Four orange evidence cones were placed at the front door of the house during the investigation. A Nissan Titan pickup truck was towed from the residence.

Police scanner reports indicated the shooting occurred about 11:20 p.m. Tuesday.

About five adult women, an adult male and about six children vacated the house for about an hour as police investigated.

Police declined to give any information at the scene, including whether the shooting took place at the house on Middle Street, whether the victim had suffered more than one gunshot wound and whether there were any other victims.

Bystanders at the scene also declined to comment.
