A man was shot and killed Tuesday night in the 900 block of Ranney Avenue.
Cape Girardeau police chief Wes Blair said police responded to a report of shots fired.
When they arrived, "He was clearly deceased," Blair said.
Blair said the man had been shot, but was unable to confirm how many times. He said there was no chance the wounds were self-inflicted.
Police had no suspects. Blair had no information on the weapon, but said he didn't believe there were any witnesses to the shooting.
The man, whose identity has not been confirmed, lay facedown on a slight embankment in the yard at 911 Ranney Ave.
Police were investigating a silver Lexus parked across the street from the house. He said no one in the neighborhood had claimed it, and authorities believed it may have belonged to the victim.
Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton arrived on the scene about 10:30 p.m. Blair said he suspects the autopsy will be conducted today.
The investigation is ongoing.
