The U.S. attorney's office on Monday announced that Deidrick Reed of Charleston, Missouri, was sentenced to concurrent sentences of 96 months for making a false bomb threat and armed bank robbery.
Reed, 26, also received a consecutive sentence of 84 months for using, carrying and brandishing a firearm during, and in relation to, a crime of violence. He appeared before U.S. District Judge John A. Ross.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Larry H. Ferrell said Reed will start serving his sentence immediately. Reed is being held in a county jail, awaiting transport to the Bureau of Prisons.
At his plea hearing in June, Reed admitted that on the morning of Dec. 12, he and an accomplice made a call to the Charleston Department of Public Safety claiming there was a bomb at all three local schools. Reed's call resulted in the evacuation of the elementary, junior and senior high schools in Charleston, a news release states.
While law enforcement officers were responding to the schools, Reed and his accomplice robbed the Citizens Bank of Charleston of $29,701.09.
Reed and his accomplice entered the bank wearing hoods and masks and brandishing guns. Reed went to the teller window and demanded money while pointing his weapon at bank employees. His accomplice went into the record-keeping department, brought the employees to the teller's area at gunpoint and ordered them to the ground. The tellers put the money in a duffle bag and the alleged robbers fled the bank, the release says.
Reed was arrested in Chicago by the FBI's Violent Crimes/Fugitive Task Force on Jan. 21. When interviewed by federal and state law enforcement officers, Reed admitted his role in robbing Citizens Bank, according to the release.
In a separate incident, Reed was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action in connection with a Nov. 30 shooting at the Eagles Club, 219 Trotter St., according to a Southeast Missourian article.
Reed pleaded guilty in January 2011 to third-degree domestic assault, online court records show.
He also pleaded guilty in April 2008 to marijuana possession and in November 2010 to receiving stolen property.
