BOLIVAR, Mo. -- A western Missouri man was sentenced to a total of 40 years in prison for the racially tinged stabbing death at a party.

Robert Beal, 27, was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years in prison for second-degree murder in the Oct. 2002 death of Zandon Maddix, 22. Both men were from Windsor. Beal is white and Maddix is black.

Benton County Prosecutor Karen Woodley said Beal attacked and stabbed Maddix several times in the back seat of a car after making racially derogatory remarks to Maddix.

Maddix later bled to death in the car when his friends had to stop on the way to help to repair a tire that Beal allegedly slashed.
